Ian McKellen as Henry Wriothesley
The year is 1613 and Shakespeare is acknowledged as the greatest writer of the age but disaster strikes when his renowned Globe Theatre burns to the ground. Devastated, Shakespeare returns to Stratford, where he must face a troubled past and a neglected family.
Haunted by the death of his only son Hamnet, he struggles to mend the broken relationships with his wife and daughters. In so doing, he is forced to ruthlessly examine his own failings as husband and father. His very personal search for the truth uncovers secrets and lies within a family at war.
"Judi Dench and Ian McKellen offer solid support in a story of Shakespeare's home life that tiptoes between fact and fiction. Ian McKellen has a colossal, emphatically wigged cameo as the ageing Earl of Southampton." — Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
"The pic's highlight, however, is a long fireside chat between Shakespeare and a welcome guest, the Earl of Southampton (Ian McKellen)." — Todd McCarthy, Variety
"Shakespeare also receives a visit from the Earl of Southampton (McKellen), believed by some to be the inspiration for Shakespeare's love poetry. Their exchange of recitations from his Sonnet 29 becomes the fulcrum for an intimate, nuanced scene about a love forbidden for reasons both of decorum and class." — Jonathan Romney, Screen Daily
